We used to spend a month or two every year in Africa. What an exciting place to paint. I think John must have been a night owl in another life. He loved to sit outside of the tent and watch what was going on around the river. One moonlit night he heard a crashing sound down on the water, on the far bank. We could barely make out what was happening because it was so dark. There on the opposite bank of the Mara River was a Cape Buffalo crashing thru the papyrus. John created this mysterious painting called The Beast.
